Dr. Bernard Zinman, Director of the Leadership Sinai Centre for Diabetes and the Sam and Judy Pencer Family Chair in Diabetes Research at Mount Sinai Hospital and the University of Toronto, Canada

Dr. Zinman is Professor of Medicine at the University of Toronto and Senior Scientist at the Samuel Lunenfeld Research Institute, Mount Sinai Hospital. He was director of the Banting and Best Diabetes Centre and is involved with diabetes care and research at both the national and international levels. He is the Principal Investigator of the University of Toronto Centre for the DCCT/EDIC study. He is the recipient of numerous awards including the Charles H. Best Medal for Distinguished Service in the Cause of Diabetes and the American Diabetes Association’s Outstanding Physician Clinician Award (2006). His main research interests include the long-term complications of diabetes mellitus, the development of new therapies for Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes, diabetes in Aboriginal communities, and studies directed at the prevention of diabetes.

 

 

Dr. Yutaka Seino, President, Kansai Electric Power Hospital, Osaka, and Emeritus Professor of Kyoto University, Kyoto, Japan

Dr. Seino’s focus on the characteristics of diabetes in Asians has contributed to the improvement in the diagnosis, treatment and education of this patient population. His extensive research has increased understanding of the insulin secretory mechanism and the roles of the incretins GLP-1 and GIP. He has won numerous awards for his work, including the Hagedon Award for the Japan Diabetes Society etc. Currently, he serves IDF as chair elect of IDF/WPR. Dr. Seino also organized the launch of the Asian Association for the Study of Diabetes to promote research activity and improved diabetes care.
