Professor Gerald M Reaven, MD, Stanford School of Medicine, USA
Professor Reaven is Professor of Medicine (Active Emeritus) at the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine, Stanford School of Medicine, California, USA. During the past 35 years, Professor Reaven has developed the now widely accepted concept that insulin resistance and hyperinsulinemia are both associated with an array of metabolic disorders that include type 2 diabetes mellitus, hypertension, dyslipidemia, hyperuricemia, and altered coagulation and fibrinolysis. All such disorders contribute to increased atherosclerosis and cardiovascular disease. Professor Reaven coined the term 'Syndrome X' for this condition, which is now more commonly called the 'Insulin Resistance Syndrome'. Professor Reaven's work has been seminal in demonstrating the linkage between insulin resistance, hyperinsulinemea and cardiovascular disease in patients with 'Syndrome X' or type 2 diabetes.
