Novartis & Diabetes

Novartis is committed to developing new drugs for the treatment of diabetes and has one of the most robust and extensive research programs focused on cardiovascular and metabolic diseases in the world.

In 2007, Novartis spent over USD 6.4 billion on research and development, including programs focused on metabolic diseases.

Novartis pioneered the development of DPP-4 inhibitors with Galvus® (vildagliptin) and Eucreas® (single-pill combination of vildagliptin and metformin), which are new oral treatments for patients with type 2 diabetes.

Ground-breaking research by Novartis and a number of independent research organizations has uncovered genetic markers linked to risk factors for type 2 diabetes, opening the possibility of new and effective treatment options. As part of the Diabetes Genetics Initiative (DGI), a public-private partnership, Novartis has identified three regions of human DNA that contain clear genetic risk factors for type 2 diabetes.

Novartis has also developed Starlix® (nateglinide), an oral treatment for patients with type 2 diabetes.

Novartis is undertaking the landmark NAVIGATOR study - the first study which will explore the relationship between prevention of diabetes in high risk patients and the subsequent ability to reduce CV events.

In addition to conducting groundbreaking research, Novartis created the international Novartis Prize in Diabetes to help increase the awareness of and urgency for innovation in diabetes clinical research. This annual award program recognizes outstanding individuals who have dedicated themselves to improving the lives of people with diabetes.
